Despoina Trivela is a PhD student in the Image, Video and Multimedia Systems Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (IVML-NTUA).
She obtained her diploma from the the school of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens in 2009. Her research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, description logics, query rewriting techniques over ontologies.
Her PhD thesis is  focusing mainly on conjunctive query answering algorithms for expressive ontologies. She has designed optimisation techniques for query rewriting  in the DL-Lite, ELHI and Horn-SHIQ description logic languages. The designed algorithms aim to reduce the number of redundant inferences conducted during the rewriting procedure, as well as to minimise the number of query rewritings.
The algorithms have been implemented into the query rewriting system Rapid that has been developed in IVML.
She has conducted an internship in Paris Sud 11 University where she worked on ontology-based data access and query rewriting techniques over inconsistent lightweight ontologies. During the last two years, she is also working in applying the specific techniques for semantic query answering in the area of cultural content web access, in the framework of EU funded projects.

Dr. Nikolaos (Nikos) Simou was born in Athens, Greece in January 1981. He is a researcher at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the National and Technical University of Athens and a member of Image, Video and Multimedia Systems Laboratory (IVML). His research interests include knowledge representation both under certain and uncertain or imprecise knowledge based on crisp and fuzzy descriptions logics, ontologies, implementation and optimization of reasoning systems and the management of metadata for digital libraries.

The main focus of his work during his Ph.D was the implementation and optimization of fuzzy reasoning systems. He designed and implemented the innovative fuzzy reasoning engine FiRE based on the fuzzy description logic f-SHIN. Another important part of his work involves the implementation of semantic multimedia applications. More specifically, he proposed a system using fuzzy description logics for exploiting the information offered by multimedia algorithms and classifying multimedia documents. He has also participated in W3C Taskforce Multimedia Annotation on the Semantic Web (MM).

During the last two years, he has been involved in many initiatives and EC projects concerning metadata modeling and aggregation, digital cultural heritage access and interoperability, semantic web technologies. He participated in Europeana activities for the prototyping of EDM, while his research is focused on the semantic transformation, the enrichment and the publication of cultural metadata as Linked Open Data.
